Crystal violet stain is used as a primary stain in gram staining procedures

Iodine is used as a mordant in gram staining procedures. The nonstabilized formula is thinner and meant for use with a slow decolorizer. The stabilized formula is thicker and meant for use with an intermediate decolorizer.

Safranin is a traditional counterstain used in gram staining procedures. An advanced counterstain is also available for improved staining. Organisms stained with the advanced counterstain will appear a brighter red with better defined edges. Stained cells are less likely to be overwashed.

The decolorizer is intermediate strength, comprised of 50% alcohol and 50% acetone. It is recommended to be used with a stabilized iodine.
