Spectrin (Sp), the most abundant of the erythrocyte membrane skeleton proteins, helps cells maintain their characteristic biconcave shape while remaining flexible and elastic. Mutations in spectrins cause ataxia and neurodegenerative disease that affect membrane proteins involved in glutamate signaling. Mutations in beta-3, specifically, can cause spinocerebellar ataxia type 5 (SCA5).
