N,O-Bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) is a silylation reagent used to add trimethylsilyl groups to amines and other polar functional groups. CovaChem manufactures BSTFA with 1 % TMCS, which serves as a catalyst for the silyl derivatization reaction. BSTFA with TMCS is often used to derivatize samples prior to GC or GCMS analysis.
