A nitroimidazole with radiosensitizing and antineoplastic properties; metabolites accumulate in hypoxic cells and can themselves be cytotoxic or they can increase the chemosensitivity and radiosensitivity of the target cells; used in the imaging of hypoxic regions in tumors and in the cardiovascular system
