Cells can adhere to other cells or to the extracellular matrix (ECM) by cell junctions which are subcellular macromolecular structures and regulate many important biological processes. There are several types of cell junctions including tight junctions, adherent junctions, gap junctions, focal adhesion, hemidesmosomes and desmosomes. Cell junctions play a specific role in cell adhesion and transduction of mechanical force.
