PKLR is a pyruvate kinase which catalyzes the trans phosphorylation of Phosphoenolpyruvate into pyruvate and ATP. That is the rate-limiting step of glycolysis. PKLR gene encodes the L- and R-type isoenzymes through alternate splicing events controlled by different promoters.
