KCNJ3 combines with other KCNJ subunits to form heterotetrameric potassium current channels that are activated via stimulation of G protein-coupled receptors. KCNJ subunits contain 2 transmembrane domains, in contrast with the 6 transmembrane domains of their voltage-gated potassium channel relatives, and they have the characteristic potassium ion selectivity filter sequence (GYG) in their pore domain.
