Sodium- and chloride-dependent betaine transporter, also known as, BGT-1 or Na(+)/Cl(-) betaine/GABA transporter or Solute carrier family 6 member 12, and encoded by the gene name SLC6A12, may play an important role in regulation of gabaergic transmission in the brain through the reuptake of gaba into presynaptic terminals. SLC6A12 is localized to the membrane and expressed in liver, heart, skeletal muscle, placenta, and a widespread distribution in the brain.
