Established from the tumor of a 60-year-old Japanese man with moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate which was invasive into muscle layer; cell line was established from a cervical lymph node metastasis which occurred seven years after initial treatment of the primary tumor; the tumor metastasized not only to the lungs, but also to the brain; described as anchorage-independent and tumorigenic in nude mice
