DescriptionFUNCTION: Water channel. May be responsible for regulating the osmolarity of the lens. Tissue specificity: Expressed exclusively in duodenum and jejunum. Highest expression in absorptive epithelial cells at the tips of villi in the jejunum. Aquaporins contain two tandem repeats each containing three membrane-spanning domains and a pore-forming loop with the signature motif Asn-Pro-Ala (NPA). SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell membrane, Multi-pass membrane protein. Cell junction > gap junction Tissue specificity: Major component of lens fiber gap junctions.Synonyms: MIP, Lens fiber major intrinsic protein, Aquaporin-0, MIP26, MP26, MIP, AQP0
ImmunogenA synthetic peptide from aa region 240-280 of mouse AQP0 conjugated to blue carrier protein was used as the antigen. The peptide is homologous in rat and guinea pig.
