Purity >98% by HPLC. Potent Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitor (IC50 = 13.2 μM), orginally isolated from the freshwater cyanobacterium Nostoc 78-12A. The inhibitory activity is of the same order of magnitude as that of galanthamine. Very recently, it shows a 50% reduction in parasitaemia at 4 x 50 mg/kg (i.p.) in an in vivo Plasmodium berghei mouse model. See also the Des-chloro homologue 2-Methylnorharmane.
