Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), also known as colony stimulating factor 2 (CSF2), is a monomeric glycoprotein secreted by macrophages, T cells, mast cells, NK cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts that functions as a cytokine. Like IL-3, GM-CSF is a multipotential growth factor, stimulating proliferation of progenitor cells from more than one hematopoietic lineage. GM-CSF induces myeloid progenitor cells from bone marrow to form colonies containing macrophages and granulocytes in a semisolid medium. GM-CSF stimulates the development of neutrophils and macrophages and the proliferation and development of early erythroid, megakaryocytic and eosinophilic progenitor cells. GM-CSF, in combination with IL4 was demonstrated to induce in vitro generation of dendritic cells from monocytes (Caux C et al, Nature. 1992 Nov 19; 360 (6401):258-61).
