Accelerated stability testing is a modified stability testing method used to quickly estimate the expiration date or life span of a product when real time data is unavailable. An accelerated stability study is carried out by subjecting the product to an elevated level of stress (usually controlled changes in temperature or humidity). The accelerated study is used to allow a product to be released to market based upon successful accelerated stability testing of the product. The testing period is the time frame expected or required for product expiration (1 year, 2 years, etc). Accelerated data is recognized by international regulatory bodies as an acceptable means to immediately generate required data, but is only accepted until those tests can be repeated on real time samples. Thus a real-time stability test is usually run simultaneously with the accelerated stability test.
