Description
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored neuronal membrane protein that functions as a cell adhesion molecule. It may play a role in the formation of axon connections in the developing nervous system. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene.Function:Contactins mediate cell surface interactions during nervous system development. Has some neurite outgrowth-promoting activity in the cerebral cortical neurons but not in hippocampal neurons. Involved in neuronal activity in the auditory system.Subcellular location: Cell membrane, Lipid-anchor, GPI-anchor.Tissue specificity: Expressed in the nervous system. Preferentially expressed in the central auditory pathways.Developmental stage: Specifically expressed in the postnatal nervous system, reaching a maximum level at 3 weeks postnatal. Immunogen
A synthetic peptide from mouse Contactin-5 (NB-2, contactin 5, CNTN5) conjugated to an immunogenic carrier protein was used as the antigen.
