Neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) is an ~28kD neurotrophic factor and member of the cysteine knot family of growth factors, which signals via LNGFR and trkB receptors and is involved in the control, survival and differentiation of peripheral sensory sympathetic neurons. Bronchial eosinophils, activated by NT-4, may be involved in the regulation of eosinophilic inflammation in allergic asthma. NT-4 influences airway smooth muscle intracellular Ca2+ concentration which may play a role in airway disease. Expression of NT-4 occurs in embryonic and adult tissues.
