Description
DEF-3 recognizes a family of cyclic peptides (MW < 3500) in human neutrophils. Four of these peptides (HNP-1 to HNP-4) are described in humans and six (NP-1 to NP-5) in rabbits. The NP-3 is also called corticostatin. In macrophages, synonyms for NP-1 and NP-2 are MCP-1 and MCP-2, respectively. The function of these peptides apart from their bactericidal, antifungal, and monocyte chemotactic functions is the inhibition of ACTH-induced corticosteroid synthesis.
