This cell line was isolated from a liver biopsy of a male Caucasian aged 15 years, with a well differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma. The cells secrete a variety of major plasma proteins e.g. albumin, alpha2-macroglobulin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, transferrin and plasminogen. The cells demonstrate decreased expression of apoA-I mRNA and increased expression of catalase mRNA in response to gramoxone (oxidative stress). There is no evidence of a Hepatitis B virus genome in this cell line.
