It prevents iron acquisition by microorganisms by sequestering iron-loaded bacterial siderophores. In contrast to its pro-apoptotic activity, Lcn2 has also been reported to be a survival factor. Lcn2 protected thyroid carcinoma cells from apoptosis induced by serum deprivation and silencing of Lcn2 reduced thyroid tumor growth.
