Neuraminidase (EC 3.2.1.18) is a tetrameric Ca2+-dependent sialidase enzyme that cleaves α-glycosidic linkages of terminal sialic acid residues from the oligosaccharide chains of glycoproteins. Neuraminidase-family enzymes are present in most lifeforms, from bacteria to humans, and are also encoded by several viral genomes, including influenza viruses.
